Fort
James, originally named
Fort Jacobits after Duke
Jacob Kettler.
The site of the
oldest town and
settlement in Tobago. The
Dutch town of Nieuw
Vessuigen and the
settlement called Niew
Walcherin (1628-1650)
were destroyed by the
Spaniards and the Caribs.
Fort James is
located next to the
mystery tombstone and the
Great Courland Bay
settlement in Plymouth.
The barracks and
cannons still stand as
guardians of the Great
Courland Bay as they were
designed to do by the
original Courland
settlers and soldiers who
constructed it. The grounds of
the fort are well
maintained. |
