Calypso
is Trinidad &
Tobago's unique musical
form..
|
|
Calypso
combines
African, French, British,
Spanish and East Indian
influences.
It has evolved
from 18th century social
commentators who sung the
early shantwells, into
the creative and witty
lyrics of today.
There is a new
breed of Rapso artistes -
fusing calypso and rap
music.
Chutney is an
East Indian version of
calypso, it is also being
fused with soca, to
create "chutney
soca".
The influences
of reggae, dancehall, and
pop music are all to be
found in Calypso.
The major annual
calypso monarch
competition takes place
at the Sunday night
Dimanche Gras show in the
Queen's Park Savannah.

Calypso
competitions are intense.
Extempo is a
hilarious competition in which
calypsonians - take an
arbitrarily selected topic and
sing extemporaneously as the
melody begins. Performers sing
about their opponents, politics
or rhyme social comments with
amazing skill, to the absolute
delight of their audience.
There are
many pre-carnival musical events.
Parties are everywhere, and
everyone's invited - a small
cover charge usually applies.
At these
events you'll notice how open and
friendly the people are and that
everyone is happy even if they're
drunk.
Fights and ugly scenes are very
rare.

Trinidad
and Tobago offer a wide variety
of accommodation types, but they
get scarce at carnival time.
Thousands of visitors
and natives, accompanied by
relatives and friends return
annually for Carnival.
If you want to spend
your vacation in T&T at his
